If you're researching Nokia — whether it's the telecom equipment side, a classic like the Nokia 2600, or current models like the 6300 4G and 800 Tough — you've probably run into the same questions I hear from customers every week. I'm a quality and compliance manager at a telecom equipment distributor. I review every batch of Nokia devices and network components before it reaches customers, roughly 1,500 items a month. Is Nokia still a serious player in telecommunications equipment manufacturing?
Yes — and honestly, anyone who still thinks of Nokia as just a 2000s phone brand is behind the times. Nokia is one of the few manufacturers building complete 5G networks end-to-end: radio access, baseband, core, and IP transport. This is coming from someone who truly appreciates the build quality of those early 2000s devices. What's the Nokia 6300 4G actually like?

From the receiving dock, the 6300 4G has been one of the steadiest performers in our lab. The Nokia 800 Tough is certified to MIL-STD-810G and carries an IP68 rating, meaning it's dust-tight and can handle submersion in up to 1.5 meters of water for 30 minutes. Nokia also specifies an operating temperature range of -20°C to 55°C (official product page, accessed February 2025). In practice, this phone is built for warehouse floors, outdoor work, and rough handling.
But drop it at the wrong angle onto a sharp edge, and the display can still crack. The certification covers defined test scenarios, not every possible impact. Our own return data puts the 800 Tough at around 0.8% — better than any comparable rugged phone we've carried. I'm not a materials engineer, so I can't speak to the specific failure mechanics. I just know what the numbers say.
What are the most common quality issues you see with Nokia products?
After five years of incoming inspections, the issues I see with Nokia gear fall into three buckets. First: firmware mismatches. How do I verify my Nokia equipment is genuine?
Most people don't think to ask this — which is exactly why I'm asking it for you. Counterfeit telecom equipment is a genuine problem in the enterprise space. In early 2024, we rejected three batches of "Nokia" enterprise switches from an unauthorized reseller. They were refurbished units with cloned serial plates.
