Here’s my honest take: Nokia still makes phones, but the phones are not the main reason to care about Nokia. In my role coordinating emergency network restoration for a managed services provider, I’ve spent 12 years and about 150 outage post-mortems learning what breaks when clients can’t afford downtime. I don’t say this lightly: Nokia’s boring reliability is, in itself, a competitive advantage.
A typical Nokia company overview starts with rubber boots and paper mills. That history matters, but it misses the pattern. Nokia has repeatedly chosen hard engineering over flashy consumer trends. The company that makes 5G gear today still designs the way it designed the 8250: fix one problem extraordinarily well.

I’ll date myself: the Nokia 8250 was the phone that made everyone notice blue backlighting. But what made it great was not the glow. It was the battery life and the simplicity. You charged it when you needed to, not every night. It did not ask for your attention. It was a tool that worked.
The 8250 didn’t try to be a miniature computer. It was a narrow product executed extremely well. That is exactly what network operators need from infrastructure: a single function you can rely on when everything around it is noisy.
That design philosophy disappeared for a while. Then it came back in the shape of dumb phones like the Nokia 2720 Flip.

Read enough Nokia 2720 Flip reviews and you’ll see a pattern. People talk about the solid hinge, the long standby time, and the relief of not having a screen constantly interrupting them. It is trying to compete with your attention span.
From a B2B perspective, that is exactly the kind of product thinking that matters. The question is not “can it do everything?” but “does it do the essential thing well?” When I choose network equipment for a client, I ask the same question. I do not need every bell. I need the one function to keep working when everything else fails.

Straight answer: does Nokia still make phones? Yes, mostly through HMD Global, which licenses the Nokia brand. Nokia itself is now focused on network infrastructure, 5G, IP routing, optical transport, and industrial automation. That is a better business for the company, and it is a better story for enterprise buyers.
People often assume that a company that used to make phones must now be a weakened version of its old self. That assumption misses the point. The phone business taught Nokia how to manufacture at scale, how to manage global supply chains, and how to design for durability. Those capabilities now live in the network business.
The licensing model is not a sign of weakness; it is an efficient allocation of resources. The consumer phone line keeps the brand visible, while the network business does the heavy, high-value lifting. That split lets Nokia concentrate its engineering budget on the problems that matter to industrial and telecom customers.
The Blood Pressure Monitor: Not a Detour, a Signal
Here’s where I lose people. The moment we talk about a Nokia blood pressure monitor, someone asks: “Why are they making medical devices?” I used to wonder the same thing. Efficiency Is the Real Competitive Advantage
Here’s the opinion I keep coming back to: efficiency is not a cost-cutting measure. It is a competitive advantage. When a network is efficient, you have more time to think. When a workflow is efficient, you make fewer errors. When a device is efficient, you do not need to manage it every hour. This is true for the 8250, the 2720 Flip, and a 5G core network. Nokia’s public product pages emphasize end-to-end automation, not raw speed. That is a deliberate positioning, and it matches what I see in the field.
Some business people worry that “digital efficiency” is another way to say “artificial intelligence replaces everyone.” I do not mean that. I mean that automation should remove worrying, not thinking. Nokia’s move from consumer phones to B2B networks is, at its heart, a move toward more important problems. It lets the people who need reliable communication focus on their own work, instead of managing the communication system.
The Objection I’d Expect
The obvious objection is that Nokia is not really a vertical company anymore. After the Microsoft years and the HMD licensing deal, some people say Nokia is just a brand, not a manufacturer. I understand why that sounds true. But it fails the “what happens when something breaks” test. When a carrier-grade Nokia node fails, you do not wait for a license holder to answer. You work with Nokia’s network teams. The part of the company that runs your business is the part that is accountable.
I’m not saying Nokia is perfect. No network vendor is. I’ve seen firmware issues and configuration gotchas. But a vendor’s true character shows when you call at midnight with a broken circuit. Nokia answers.
So Buy the Phone, If You Want. But Understand the Company.
Does Nokia still make phones? Yes. The Nokia 2720 Flip is a great answer to smartphone overload, and the Nokia 8250 will always be a nostalgic classic. But the Nokia company overview that matters in 2025 is about networks, automation, and a cultural commitment to things that work the first time.
If you run a business that cannot afford downtime, look at the infrastructure, not the device. And if you own a Nokia blood pressure monitor, calibrate it properly—against a known reference, with the right cuff, multiple times. That, for me, is the whole Nokia philosophy.
