My younger brother still teases me about the Nokia Lumia 1520 I had back in 2014. He thinks Nokia is stuck in the past. Fair enough—that phone was a brick. But here's what he doesn't see: the Nokia I order now has nothing to do with phones.
I'm an office administrator for a 220-person professional services firm. I manage procurement for our office—roughly $1.2 million annually across 8 or 9 vendors. Maybe 8, I'd have to check. If you asked me which vendor has surprised me most in the last three years, I'd say Nokia.
My opinion: most B2B buyers are overlooking Nokia because of Lumia-era brand memory, and that's a mistake. Nokia's enterprise portfolio now includes Optical LAN, IP routing, private wireless, and industrial networking. According to Nokia's Optical LAN overview (nokia.com, accessed April 2025), the architecture can reduce active components and cabling compared to a traditional LAN. I'm not a network engineer. But for our building, the numbers made sense.
How I ended up specifying Nokia optical LAN
In late 2023, we renovated two floors and had to rewire. Our IT manager came to me with a quote from a big networking vendor—about 600 feet of horizontal cable per floor, three telecom closets, the works. It looked fine on paper. But our building has unusually thick concrete floors, and the server room is on the fifth floor. Every IT person I spoke to said "copper is easier." The conventional wisdom didn't match our reality.
Then our telecom consultant mentioned Nokia optical LAN. Instead of copper from closet to desk, it runs fiber through passive splitters. No active electronics on each floor. Fewer telecom closets. Less cooling load. It sounded like a sales pitch until I sat down with the numbers.
The argument that won me over: total cost, not sticker price
Here's where I got stubborn. The initial Nokia quote was about 18% higher than the traditional setup. Everything I'd read about procurement said to look at total cost of ownership, but I was having trouble seeing past the line items on the quote.
Then our facilities manager did a back-of-the-envelope estimate. Because Nokia optical LAN eliminates three telecom closets and their cooling, we saved floor space. Because passive splitters use less copper, we cut roughly 900 kg of cabling. Power and cooling savings came to about $6,200 per year. The payback period landed under three years.
I should add: I'm quoting a project quote from March 2024, so verify current pricing; it won't be the same for your building. But that's the point. The "cheaper" copper option would have cost us more every year after year one. The Nokia optical quote was the penny-wise, pound-foolish trap in reverse.
Why reliability matters more than specs
I'll stop pretending I can compare packet forwarding rates. What I can tell you is what the equipment did after we turned it on in May 2024—no, actually June 2024, I'm mixing it up with the furniture project.
We had a power outage in July. The UPS kicked in, the fiber gear came back, and I didn't hear about it until the next day. That's the highest compliment I can give as an admin: bored IT people. No tickets, no angry calls. The "boring" stuff is what makes my department look good.
The vendor delivered on time and the invoice was correct. That may sound like a low bar, but after six years of managing vendor relationships, I've learned that a correct invoice is rarer than a red flag on a first date.
What about my brothers in manufacturing?
Both of my brothers think I've gone soft on Nokia. The younger one still reminds me about the Lumia 1520. The older one works in maintenance at a food processing plant, and he buys test tools, not telecom gear. When he asked me for the best multimeter for home use last year, I sent him a list from an electrician's forum—not a Nokia page, because Nokia doesn't make multimeters. But his plant does run Nokia's industrial networking gear on one packaging line. He admits it has survived wash-downs that killed other brands.
That matters because manufacturing environments are the reason I don't lump all Nokia into one bucket. The company has a real industrial hardware operation. I'm not saying their gear is indestructible—nothing is. But there's a difference between a brand that tested its hardware in a lab and one that tested it on a production floor.
Where I'd draw the line
Let me be honest about the limits of this recommendation, because I think that honesty is the only reason anyone trusts a purchasing guy like me.
Nokia optical is not for every office. If you have a small office with short runs, existing structured cabling, and no plans to expand, you probably don't need a PON architecture. Buy a managed switch from a mainstream vendor and move on. The cost of abandoning copper you already own is too high.
If your contractor isn't comfortable terminating fiber, you'll pay for training and mistakes. That can eat the whole TCO advantage. And if you need deep integration with a Cisco or Aruba wireless controller, check compatibility before you commit—don't assume.
Also, if someone asks for the best multimeter for home use, don't send them to Nokia. Nokia is in optical networking and telecom infrastructure, not test tools. A Fluke or Klein meter will serve them better. Recommending a product outside its lane is how procurement credibility dies.
What I'd tell anyone who thinks Nokia is just phones
I get it. The Nokia Lumia 1520 was a handsome brick that ran an abandoned ecosystem. But holding that against the company's current networking business is like refusing to use a car company because they made tractors 100 years ago.
Nokia optical LAN isn't a nostalgia play. It's a legitimate alternative for mid-size enterprises, campus networks, hospitals, and industrial sites. It won't fit everywhere, and I've said so. But for our situation, it was the right call. The Nokia optical gear has been running for nearly a year with no unplanned network outages—and by "unplanned," I mean anything that wasn't deliberately scheduled by our IT team.
The bottom line: don't let an old phone decide your procurement strategy. Talk to an integrator. Walk through your building. Run the numbers, including the ones that don't appear on the equipment quote. If Nokia optical makes sense, buy it. If it doesn't, at least you'll have a solid reason—and that's better than a gut feeling from 2014.
