Common Mistakes to Avoid
I've been handling network infrastructure orders for medium-sized businesses since 2017. In that time, I've personally made and documented seven significant procurement mistakes, totaling roughly $3,200 in wasted budget and countless hours of rework.
This checklist is what I wish I'd had during my first Nokia deployment in 2019. It's for procurement managers, IT directors at SMBs, or anyone evaluating Nokia switches for the first time and wondering where to start. It covers five steps I now follow without exception.

This also helps when comparing Nokia vs Cisco feature compatibility. Nokia's CLI is different. You'll want to know exactly what you currently need so you can verify compatibility.
Step 2: Plan the Full Device Ecosystem, Not Just Switches
Here's what I see small businesses do: they buy the network gear from one budget, then realize they need endpoint devices and scramble. Nokia's strength is the full stack — from infrastructure to phones to health monitoring. If you're evaluating them, look at the whole picture.
Consider these scenarios:
- Do you need Nokia 110 4G (2024) phones for frontline workers? The battery on that model lasts days — real advantage for field staff.
- Are you integrating blood pressure monitors into a workplace wellness program? Nokia's health devices sync via Bluetooth to their management platform.
- Do you have any nostalgia or side-interest in older Nokia hardware? I once had a procurement manager ask about N-Gage Nokia compatibility (that's the gaming phone from 2003 — no, it doesn't work on modern LTE networks). Put those thoughts aside for this evaluation.
Checklist item for Step 2: ☐ Compile a device list across three categories: network infrastructure (switches, routers, access points), user endpoint devices (phones, tablets), and IoT/health devices (blood pressure monitors, other sensors).
I can only speak to mid-size B2B deployments with predictable ordering patterns. If you're a clinic managing patient data, the compliance requirements will add complexity I'm not covering here.
Step 3: Verify Your VLAN and QoS Requirements Against Nokia's SROS (This Is the One Most People Miss)
This is the step that tripped me up twice. The numbers said any enterprise switch would work — my gut said check the details. Turns out, my gut was right. (I've learned to trust that feeling.)
Nokia's SROS (Service Router Operating System) has specific VLAN configuration requirements that differ from Cisco's IOS. If you're migrating from Cisco, be aware:
- Nokia uses a different port naming convention (e.g., 1/1/c1/1 vs. Gi0/1)
- QoS configurations use a class-of-service model that maps differently to DSCP
- If you rely on Cisco-specific protocols like HSRP, Nokia uses a different approach for redundancy
Here's what I do now: I create a side-by-side comparison of our current Cisco VLAN setup and map each parameter to Nokia's equivalent. It takes two hours. It has saved me from ordering the wrong configuration three times.
Checklist item for Step 3 (the critical one): ☐ Map each current VLAN, QoS policy, and routing configuration to the equivalent SROS parameters. If you can't find a direct equivalent, ask the rep before you order. (I didn't. $890 redo fee.)

Step 4: Get Pricing for Small Quantities (and Don't Assume You're Not Worth It)
This is where the "small customer" mindset matters. When I was starting out in procurement, the vendors who treated my $2,400 orders seriously are the ones I still use for $20,000+ orders. Nokia's channel can be tricky for small buyers.
Pricing context (based on publicly available distributor quotes, early 2025; verify current rates):
- Entry-level Nokia 7250 IXR switch: approximately $1,800-$2,800 MSRP for base 24-port model
- Nokia 110 4G (2024) phone: approximately $80-$120 retail
- Blood pressure monitor: approximately $130-$200 retail (health device line)
- Budget tier vs. premium: expect 30-50% premium for full SROS enterprise license vs. basic L2
If a rep tells you, "Our minimum order is $5,000", ask about the Nokia partner program for SMBs. They have a specific channel for smaller deployments. That's how I got my first order through without the minimum — I found a partner who specialized in SMB.
Checklist item for Step 4: ☐ Get quotes from at least two Nokia-authorized distributors. Ask specifically about SMB partner programs. Don't accept "minimum order" as final without asking twice.
Step 5: Plan Lead Times and Support SLAs (Don't Assume Enterprise Support for Entry Gear)
Had two hours to decide on a support contract once — the deadline for the end of the quarter pricing was approaching. Normally I'd review the SLA document, but there was no time. Went with the basic plan. Three months later, an RMA took two weeks on a critical switch. In hindsight, I should have pushed back on the timeline. But with the CFO waiting, I made the call with incomplete information.
Here's what I learned about Nokia support:
- Basic support for entry-level gear may not include next-business-day replacement
- Software licensing for SROS is separate from hardware — verify this in your quote
- Lead times on non-stock models can be 4-6 weeks (same as Cisco, but plan for it)
- If you're ordering a mix of network gear and endpoint devices (like the Nokia 110 4G phones), they may ship from different warehouses — coordinate arrival dates
Checklist item for Step 5: ☐ Request written lead times for each device category and confirm support SLA tier before signing. Get the software license SKUs in the quote so there's no surprise renewal fee.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Based on my personal errors (and I've made plenty):
- Don't assume configuration compatibility. Nokia's CLI and management philosophy differ from Cisco. Budget time for the learning curve.
- Don't skip the PoE budget calculation. I once ordered a switch that couldn't power our VoIP phones. The Nokia 110 4G phones are low-power, but if you're adding blood pressure monitors or other health devices, total PoE draw adds up.
- Don't forget the endpoint devices. If you're evaluating Nokia infrastructure, ask about the whole ecosystem — phones, health devices, and management platform. The value proposition improves significantly when you bundle.
- Don't let the "N-Gage Nokia" nostalgia distract you. (Yes, I've had this conversation twice in actual procurement meetings. It's a fun story, not a viable product.)
Bottom line: Nokia network infrastructure can work well for small and medium businesses, especially if you're interested in the full device ecosystem. The key is preparation, detailed configuration mapping, and finding the right channel partner. Small doesn't mean unimportant — it means you need to ask the right questions early.
